Haha, you are possibly thinking, that I'm going to critisize all the details, humor, pacing, script, etc. No, I'm not going. Not because it's not the biggest problem. But because it's not a problem at all. Everything is all right with them and TFs are not worse, than other big popular movies, if you look closely and without any stereotypes. Yeah, stereotypes. The biggest problem of Transformers is...
the Audience. And its stereotypes.
I often hear, that people praise TF1 and blatantly revile ROTF! They emphasize, how ROTF is senseless and atrocious, that it has so much toilet humor, Devastator's testicles or humping dogs, etc. Stop. TF1 hadn't toilet humor? Remember Sam's Mom and her comments about Sam "feeding the snake", or Bumblebee peeing on Simmons? You don't remember? Or you like these moments, like me? Because everyone loves TF1, that's not a problem to consider these moments funny or do not pay much attention for them. Especially because they aren't essencial in the Movie! Had ROTF something new in this aspect? Honestly, NO. Michael Bay's Movies always have toilet jokes, like dalmatian always have white dotty skin. Even Transformers cartoons had them (and quite absurdous humor in general). TF1 had a lot of toilet jokes and people loudly laugh on them. But ROTF considered as bad, TF1 as a masterpiece.
Another example. Most of TF fans constantly ask for characterisation of Transformers and praise TF1 at the same time, when it has a little characterisation. Meanwhile AOE has tons of characterisation and very little toilet humor, but most of fans hate the film. Hey, what's the problem again?
Many people are complaining about the script of the 2-4 Movies, but do not concretisize, where it is so bad. They often repeat, that FILMS AREN'T CONNECTED with each other. Like really? You don't see a connection between final battle in ROTF and Megatron's weakness in DOTM? (Which made him remember about alience with Sentinel.) You don't see a connection between Chicago battle and some people hating Transformers in AOE, selling their weapons and hunting for their bodies? Why people say this bullshit like ROTF is the Movie about humping dogs?
I know the answer. This is the sad truth, which make Transformers even more beautiful and heroic for me. People like the stories about themselves. The problem is the most of viewers do not take Transformers as characters at all and consequently do not pay attention to the most part of the Movies! That's why TF1 is considered so good - it is the story about one HUMAN guy, meeting alien race and eventually saving the world. Certainly very good, amazingly beautiful, inspiring story!
ROTF is the story about the same guy, FORGETTING that he is the closest friend for the Autobots... They asked him for the help, he refused Refused their friendship and eventually caused a disaster. Autobots forgave everything and defended him, Optimus sacrificed his life for him... Sam understood, that he was wrong, when refused the love of Autobots, and overcame a lot of obstackles and desperation to redeem his guilt and ressurect Optimus, the One, who so loves and believes in him (and all humankind). To say, that this story is inspiring means to say nothing. When I watched ROTF for the first time it transformed my mind and threw me to the deep pondering. Why all the characters acted this way? Why the Autobots left NEST and rushed to save Sam? Just one Sam, no the humanity! Why they forgave his indifference so fastly? What do Bumblebee's words mean, which he said at night after the Forest Battle? Why Jetfire changed the side and joined Autobots? Why Sam didn't stopped (and even didn't get upset), when the Matrix turned into dust in his hands? Why Decepticons were seeking the Matrix for thousands of years, but Sam has found just after a few days? The only one word answers everything... LOVE. Love as a compassion, as a sacrifice, as Jesus Christ taught.
Why people watch the Movie and see only the toilet jokes and Michaela's ass? Why they see the drama in other hollywood blockbusters with a lot of toilet jokes too (most notably - in Armageddon, in another Michael Bay's masterpiece)? The answer is simple and destructive. Transformers aren't humans. They aren't similar to humans. Haven't families, homes, etc. (Сompare with Pandora's tribe in Avatar - they are basically humans.) But Transformers have souls. Not only their bodies can suffer (even this mostly isn't noticed), but the souls can too. DOTM and AOE tells even more about it, showing Autobots even more suffering. AOE demonstrates us a lot of emotions and did a great job to connect Optimus' soul with the viewer's one through Cade Yeager. He feels the similar parental feeling and responsibility, but in smaller scale, more understandable to the typical viewer. But, oh my God, people complain about Hound's belly and dialog about the law of Romeo and Juliet, scipping the entire drama and another hard, heroic feat.
This is the main conflict in the Movie itself - it's not the war between Autobots and Decepticons - it is the fight between Autobots and human's indifference. Only those "strange" people like Sam and Cade can understand them and feel compassion to them. For others Transformers are the "pistol under the pillow" (Simmons), "scrap metal" (Galloway), "extraterrestrial terrorists" and source for the technologies, weapon and money (Attinger and Joyce). That's not a surprise, that tens of the critics write articles, how bad the humor, pacing, acting are in TF Movies and do not write anything about the conflict, the plot, the story. They skip it, don't pay an attention to the fate of mechanical aliens. Some tiny imperfections (which presents in any movie) are clearly visible, when you do not understand about what the film tells. That's why TF1 so differs from ROTF and other Movies. It tells about human's emotions. Others mostly try to make the viewer to feel compassion to Autobots and it is essentially important for the plot. TF1 tried to evoke compassion to captured Bumblebee and, unfortunately, no one I ever spoke (except for two nice children) didn't mind this scene!
Look at the modern society - thousands of people are suffering from depression. I had it too, when my farther suddenly died and my best friend, who was living next door, didn't even payed an attention to me and my loss. The indifference is the main problem of the humanity. Be compassionate, help the suffering one - the Bible teaches. Transformers say the same. Like many other Hollywood films. But others don't do it on these tremendous intergalactic scales, showing so different civilizations, even different life forms meeting each other and having the same moral laws. The Movie lifts up the entire term of love on the new level. It teachs us to be compassionate, wise and sincere, to open our soul and lend a helping hand to everyone in need. Even to the one who is from another world. The problem is not in the couple of minutes with the diluting humorous scenes, making the Movie a bit lighter and even more realistic. The problem is people do not want to listen this message, do not want to go through the feelings, the heroes lived through. The compassion to the mechanical alien race considered not needed and senseless... What about the compassion to other humans? The ones, who are in trouble? To the extincting animals? How many people with outstretched hand we see and ignore everyday? Is the difference so big between them and Autobots? Looking, how indifferent and rude people can be even to their family members... No it isn't.
